Large 18th Century Old Sheffield Plated Chestnut Urn
Regular price $1,295.00This impressive silver plate on copper chestnut urn is a very fine example of Old Sheffield Plate and dates back to the late 1700s with the bow and arrow maker's mark of W. Jervis of Sheffield, England. This large statement piece could easily stand alone or be the focal point in a collection. It's a very rare and wonderful piece that boasts lion head handles with rings and an elegantly scalloped body . The stem and lid mimic this design for continuity and beauty. In superb condition with minor wear from age and use and measures approximately 15.5" high.
*Old Sheffield Plate was the alternative way to produce silver pieces from approximately the 1740s until about the 1830s and was developed accidentally by Thomas Boulsover of Sheffield, England. Old Sheffield Plate preceded Electroplating which became the easier and most cost efficient method of plating silver post 1840s and is still being produced today. With its short history of less than 100 years, Old Sheffield Plate has become quite rare and valuable as a result.
