A charming pair of late 19th to early 20th century porcelain portrait plaques mounted in ornate gilt metal frames, each depicting romanticized figures inspired by the Napoleonic and Empire periods. The images appear to have been produced using a transfer printing process and then delicately hand-embellished with enamel paint, a technique widely used in European porcelain workshops of the late Victorian era to create decorative historical scenes. One portrait shows a distinguished military officer in a white uniform adorned with medals, closely resembling the style of Napoleonic or Second Empire officers, while the companion plaque portrays an elegant Empire-era lady wearing a blue ribboned gown with roses in her hair, reminiscent of fashionable court portraits from the time of Empress Joséphine. Framed in decorative brass mounts with ribbon cresting, the plaques likely originate from a German or Austrian porcelain studio where such historical portrait subjects were popular decorative pieces for the home around the turn of the 20th century. Beautiful displayed together on a shelf, easel, or within a cabinet of curiosities, each measures approximately 4.75” x 3.25” overall and retains the soft hand-painted detail that gives these miniature portraits their timeless charm.
