This elegant porcelain tray dates to the mid-18th century and was likely part of a dessert service used during the fashionable “sweetmeat” course of European dining. In the 1700s, sweetmeats did not refer to meat at all, but to delicacies such as candied fruits, sugared almonds, and small confections presented after the main meal. Pieces like this would have been placed on the table to hold these treats as guests lingered over conversation.

The tray is crafted in soft-paste porcelain and features a delicately lobed Rococo rim accented with hand-painted enamel decoration, including manganese-purple floral sprigs, dotted garlands, and fine green and gilt borders. At the center is a charming oval cartouche tied with a ribbon and adorned with a hand-painted monogram, a detail often used in the 18th century to personalize tablewares for a particular household. Subtle molded relief along the upper and lower rim adds another layer of refinement to the form.

The underside retains small kiln spur marks from the firing process, a characteristic feature of early European porcelain production and a reminder of the traditional techniques used more than two centuries ago.

A delightful surviving example of 18th-century dessert service porcelain, this tray offers both decorative charm and a glimpse into the elegant rituals of historic European dining. In excellent antique condition without chips or cracks and measures 10.5” x 5.5”. Two available at time of listing and sold separately.
