This elegant porcelain ladies’ spittoon was produced by Hall China Company for The Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia, a landmark luxury hotel that opened its doors in 1925.
Crafted in vitrified white china with a gold pinstripe and matching hotel crest, this piece features the hotel’s full name beneath a heraldic-style coat of arms. Ladies’ spittoons like this were designed with both discretion and refinement, used in upscale guest rooms and lounges at a time when chewing tobacco use was still prevalent among women.
The bottom is clearly marked Hall’s China, a known supplier of custom hotel ware throughout the early to mid-20th century. Hall’s vitrified glaze made their ceramics especially durable and ideal for high-traffic hospitality settings
The Benjamin Franklin Hotel (originally named the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Hotel) was an Art Deco marvel and the crown jewel of Broad Street hospitality in the early 20th century. It frequently hosted dignitaries, celebrities, and upscale clientele—making its serviceware desirable to collectors today.
Hall’s China produced custom-marked hotel wares between 1920 and the early 1950s, with this spittoon most likely dating from circa 1925–1940, aligning with the hotel’s golden era
Overall very good older vintage condition with no visible cracks. Mild wear to the base consistent with age and use. The crest and lettering remain strong and legible. Measures approximately 8.5” diameter x 5.5” high
