A striking late 19th-century German ceramic bust depicting the celebrated composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809–1847). Beautifully modeled with finely detailed curls, expressive features, and period attire, the bust retains its original dark bronze-effect finish over a terracotta earthenware body, lending it the appearance of patinated bronze.
The front is inscribed “F. Mendelssohn B.”, while the underside bears the impressed model number 783 and the back is marked “R.U. 1871 Deponirt,” indicating a registered German design dating to the late Victorian period. Originally produced as part of a series of literary and musical figures, busts such as this were displayed in libraries, music rooms, and studies as symbols of culture and refinement.
An elegant decorative object with timeless appeal, equally at home atop a stack of books, within a bookcase, or as a sculptural accent on a mantel or pedestal. Measures approximately 10” high. Minor age related wear to glaze, but without chips cracks or repairs.
