This charming pair of Victorian watercolor studies captures the quiet beauty of the British countryside through a series of loosely rendered sheep, cattle, and grazing animals. One sheet is signed A. Stanley and dated 1864, while the companion appears to be executed by the same hand, sharing an identical palette, brushwork, and spontaneous style.

Rather than formal compositions, these intimate studies have the feel of an artist’s working sketches—quick observations made directly from life that celebrate the character and movement of rural livestock. Their relaxed arrangement and delicate washes lend them a whimsical quality, offering a glimpse into the artistic practice of the Victorian era, when sketching from nature was an essential part of a watercolorist’s training.

Today, these studies feel remarkably fresh, bringing warmth, personality, and a touch of English country charm to a gallery wall, library, or sitting room. Newly framed and matted to preserve and showcase the artwork, they are equally suited to traditional interiors and thoughtfully layered modern spaces.

Very good antique condition. One watercolor is signed and dated 1864; the companion is unsigned but believed to be by the same artist. Presented in later wood frames with archival-style matting. Minor age-related toning and light wear consistent with the age of the artwork. Sold as a pair. Larger measures approximately 9x10” and smaller is approximately 7x10”.
